A vote took place following a keenly contested hustings, which included William Hearnden and Ellie Manley. All four candidates distinguished themselves with in their honesty and earnest campaign speeches.

Rory expressed his delight with the result: “I am very excited to be the new Co-President. I ran for the role because of the potential I saw for the Voltaire Society to become a platform for participation and for creating interest in topics not usually covered in the classroom.”

Sam concurred with these sentiments: “Jack and Shane, our predecessors, did a great job and I hope we can build on their legacy.Rory and I will be looking at ways to develop the format and to continue covering a wide range of topical issues.”

Their first meeting as co-Presidents will take place this coming Wednesday. Devon Watson from the Climate Change Coalition will be speaking on the threats posed by environmental degradation. As ever, the Voltaire Society is open to students in all year groups. Meetings take place in the 6th Form Lecture Theatre from 3.30 pm
