This terms’ inaugural meeting of the Voltaire Society considered the debate about legalising cannabis. Considered views were put by both sides, with discussion covering the medicinal benefits of cannabis, its link with crime, the potential for it to serve as a gateway drug and growing evidence of its harmful neurological impact on teenage brains and their mental health. There were a number of well-informed contributions about the experiences of other countries, including Portugal, Switzerland and the United States.
In two weeks’ time, 25 September, the Voltaire Society will be dealing with Brexit. Frankly, someone has to.
