Refugees: time to tell the truth
This week’s meeting of the Voltaire Society, entitled ‘Refugees: time to tell the truth’, was inspired by the recent visit of Syrian refugee, Baraa Kouja. Baraa, founder of the charity ‘From Syria With Love’, addressed a number of student groups in school as part of an awareness-raising visit to the island.
The meeting was led by three guest contributors, Phil Matthews (Amnesty International) Ona MacTavish (Refugees Welcome Isle of Man) and Martin Birchenough (British Red Cross) and they shared their experiences, including lobbying politicians, working in a reception camp in Greece and helping to resettle refugees in Northern Ireland. There was a particularly interesting discussion about whether the island could and should do more to take in its fair share of displaced families. As our guests made clear, the refugee crisis is here to stay.
