His Excellency Sir Richard Gozney addresses the Voltaire Society
This week the Voltaire Society had the privilege of hosting Sir Richard Gozney, Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man. In a fascinating session Sir Richard started with an overview of his long and distinguished career, regaling the audience with anecdotes from his postings in Nigeria, Indonesia and Swaziland. As well as explaining the application process and qualifications for the role, he talked about the wonderful opportunities and challenges of life in the diplomatic service.
In the wake of the Christchurch attacks, the second half of the session focused on the issue of terrorism and its different forms in recent times. Sir Richard spoke poignantly of his experience supporting the families of British victims in the wake of the Bali bombing in 2002, as well as giving insights into the indoctrination of the perpetrators. As Voltaire said, “those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”
