July Update

By: Mrs Burnett, Headteacher

“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential…these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence”

Confucius

I consider myself to be very fortunate because each and every day I get to meet and chat to many students. They inspire me to do my job better and quite frankly I am in awe of our multi-talented young people.

This blog has been inspired by a number of events happening within a few days of each other. Fresh after the outstanding successes of our students at the Island Games, I was honoured to present the prizes at the Sports Awards Evening, organised by the PE Faculty. I was not surprised to be informed that over 300 students this year have taken part in after school sporting activities. What has left me feeling humble is the sheer determination, commitment and skills of these talented young men and women. Many of them excel in more than one discipline and have represented the school in a diverse range of sports, some of which our students experienced for the first time when they joined Ballakermeen. The PE staff regaled a full Studio Theatre audience with example after example of ‘personal bests’ from students breaking school records and overcoming tremendous odds to triumph.

I have used the quote from Confucius because this month we are playing host to a group of students from our sister school, No 1 School, Liuyang. A tentative exchange programme in 2006 has resulted in over ten years of partnership and friendship between both our schools. Last October, No 1 School celebrated the tenth visit of Ballakermeen students to China. This month, we did the same and our celebration concert featured musical performances by our award winning Choir, Xenakis. They were joined by an extremely talented saxophonist, a pianist and our BTEC Performing Arts Choir. (Only the fact that our soloists are so modest has stopped me from naming them publicly!)

Whether or not you are a talented sports person, are creative, or are a budding entrepreneur, I urge you to make the most of the opportunities that are offered. You may not know where your ‘door to personal excellence’ is now. What I do know is that Ballakermeen can provide the route forward and can shine a light onto the doors ahead. I hope I am not ending this blog with too obvious a cliche’, but if one door closes (or you slam it shut) another one will be available. It is up to you to step through…

Happy summer everyone!
